1987 Crash: Naming Names
Reagan Speech: There've been some real champions in the battle to get this legislation through Congress: Senators Bob Dole, Robert Byrd, and Strom Thurmond; Congressmen Bob Michel, Jim Wright, Benjamin Gilman, Charles Rangel, and Jerry Lewis. I'd like to single out Senator Paula Hawkins in particular. She took this battle to the public and has been a driving force behind the effort to rid our society of drug abuse. Like Nancy, she made her commitment to fighting drugs long before it was the popular thing to do. This kind of honest, hard-working leadership is what makes all the difference. And now, Paula, if you and your colleagues will join Nancy and me, we will get on with the signing of that bill, making it the law of the land.
Here are the names given "it," "the" law of the land.
Signed by President.

On 02SEP1929 the following occurred:
China pays League $100,000... The new Nationalist government of China had the largest delegation that country has ever sent to Geneva, its three official spokesmen being the Chinese ministers at Washington, Berlin and Paris. A more substantial evidence of Chinese interest was the payment of $100,000 into the League treasury just before the Assembly convened. This sum, representing six months dues in the case of China, was the first payment that country had made in several years.
The Tenth Assembly of the League of Nations, which sat at Geneva from September 2 to September 25, 1929, was in many respects the most notable gathering of that body since the League was organized in January, 1920, The representation was more complete than at any previous Assembly, fifty-three of the fifty-four member nations having delegations present... Adopts Limitation of Manufacture of dangerous drugs resolution. The following day, September 3, 1929 is the date U.S. stock market values changed from increasing to decreasing, as can be seen on the charts. (link)
This resolution on some drugs would assume pressing importance to Germany in June and July of 1931. Stay tuned, we'll be back to 1987 presently.
Good Reading: The War Below: The Story of Three Submarines That Battled Japan, by James Scott. One of the facts disclosed is how easily submarines smuggled cargo--everything from weapons, fuel, ammunition, explosives, men and materiél--past armed and eager enemy blockades. Nor was this news in 1916, when the Deutschland carried a hefty load of goods to the neutral United States in 1916. It makes you wonder about how Rum Row turned a profit 12 miles off the coast during Prohibition. After all, 97% of U.S: alcohol demand was met by brewing and distilling corn sugar. Only 3% in all could have come from Canada, Mexico and Rum Row ships--but what if those floating contraband stores were also selling drugs the government made disappear in 1914. If so, how did those supplies arrive?
